Apple is widely expected by the industry to announce a 4-inch iPhone, called the Apple iPhone SE, on March 21, but it has yet to speak a work about the device's existence. Despite the Cupertino company's silence, rumours are rife that the new iPhone will be coming with the internal specs of the iPhone 6S smartphone.

Here are the expected features of the Apple iPhone SE:

Premium appeal

Speculations say the new phone's design will be similar to that of the iPhone 5S from 2013 and iPhone 6S. It will boast a premium appeal as it is arriving with a full metallic chassis. Like the iPhone 6S, it is expected to be available in multiple colours like Space Gray, Silver, Gold and Rose Gold, 9 to 5 Mac reported.

Fast performing CPU

The iPhone SE is rumoured to be powered by the same Apple A9 chipset that is present under the hood of the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus smartphones. The M9 motion co-processor that accompanies the Apple A9 chipset will be also present inside the iPhone SE.

RAM

The Apple A9 for iPhone 6S is coupled with 2 GB of RAM. However, the iPhone SE is expected to feature 1 GB of RAM for its A9 chip.

Internal storage variants

The iPhone SE is speculated to be coming with two internal storage options, 16 GB and 64 GB. There is no information on whether a 128 GB model will also be made available.

No 3D Touch

A leaked image of the display components of the iPhone SE has revealed that it won’t be featuring a pressure-sensitive 3D Touch screen that is currently used on the iPhone 6S. The display will instead be shielded by a 2.5D curved glass.

Camera

Like the iPhone 6S, the iPhone SE will come equipped with a 12 MP rear camera. This will be coupled with a single LED flash.

Battery

The 4-inch iPhone 5S has a battery of 1560 mAh battery. However, the same-sized iPhone SE will be featuring a larger battery of 1642 mAh capacity, Mac Rumors reported.

Price range

The iPhone SE will mainly be aimed at emerging markets like China and India. It is expected to be priced around US$400 (AU$540) to US$450 (AU$606).
