Apple Inc still reigns supreme in the US with a 40 per cent market share that seems to keep on growing, according to Comscore's research. Samsung's market share has also increased but not as much as Apple's. HTC, LG and Motorola's market share have either dropped or remained flat.

According to the same report from ComScore, Google Inc's Android is leading in the platform space followed by Apple Inc's iOS. Despite Android's dominance, the iOS is trying to catch up. Also in the top 5 are Blackberry, Microsoft (Windows Phone) and Symbian.

At least 145 million Americans own smartphones in ComScore's latest figures this August, as the number has increased 3 per cent since May. Apple Inc increased its smartphone share with 40.7 per cent in August compared to 39.2 per cent in May which is a 1.5 per cent gain for the maker of iPhones, iPads and Macbooks.

Samsung's market share increased from 23 to 24.3 per cent in August as HTC lost 1.3 per cent, Motorola dropped 0.9 per cent while LG remained flat at 6.7 per cent.

Apple Inc and Samsung, when combined have gained 2.8 points while Blackberry, HTC and LG lost 2.2 points as a group. Apple's increase in market share was regarded as the most impressive considering that the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S was not yet released in Aug. 2013.

ComScore also reported that Samsung enjoyed gains from May to July. Apple Inc soared to the top in the United States and has since increased its smartphone market share more than its rival companies.

Google's Motorola X has generated impressive early reviews figures are yet to be revealed as a measure of its success. The same goes for Apple's latest iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S. Based on market share, HTC's One smartphone does not seem to gain ground along with LG's G2.

Google is still number 1 in the OS department but ComScore said Apple continues to make a steady climb in an effort to beat Android. The Android OS enjoyed positive gains in May after experiencing losses in four consecutive months.

Samsung's gains were reportedly not good enough to make up for its losses. Based on ComScore research data, Samsung caused Android to lose 0.8 per cent points in Aug. 2013 with 51.6 per cent down from 52.4 per cent.
