There is a new app, “Order a Daddy,” which makes finding the perfect sperm donor easier. Women or parents would have to swipe to search for a donor who would match all their qualifications.

The app, developed in London and used by the London Sperm Bank, provides a list of donor, include their physical characteristics, reports Tenplay. Clicking a donor’s profile would open to more details about the man’s personality, profession and medical history.

The sperm sample costs £950 (A$1,607) which a user must pay through the app. The semen is then sent to the woman’s fertility clinic.

The app has been criticised for trivialising parenthood, reports News.com.au, although it is legal and meets the requirements of the IVF regulator. Josephine Quintavalle, from Comment on Reproductive Ethics, laments, “It’s digital dads. Choose Daddy. This is the ultimate denigration of fatherhood.”

In response to the criticism, Dr Kamal Ahuja, scientific director of the London Sperm Bank, the transaction is online like a lot of other transactions. “This allows a woman who wants to get a sperm donor to gain control in the privacy of her own home and to choose and decide in her own time.”

Ahuja adds, “We think this is the first of its kind in the world.” In July 2015, a Taiwanese start up, Aidmics, sought approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for iSperm, a device to analyse sperm using the iPad.
