According to a recent report, Google's Android 5.1 is already in the works. The search giant has started rolling out the much-awaited Android 5.0 Lollipop software update only recently. In specific, all the compatible Nexus smartphones, phablets and tablets will be the first ones to get Material Design from Lollipop, across the globe.

In the famous Devoxx Conference held annually in Europe, two software engineers discussed about the upcoming Android 5.1. Reportedly, Romain Guy, an Android Software Engineer and Chet Haase, Senior Software Engineer at Google, were using a Nexus 5 running on none-other-than "Android Lollipop MR1." The version MR1 corresponds to the "Maintenance Release 1," according to Phone Arena.

To further corroborate, a report claims that Android Lollipop MR1 is an early version of the main Android 5.1. The same report pointed out that Android 2.0 MR1, subsequently turned into Android 2.1. Plus, Android 3.0 MR1 turned out to be Android 3.1. Following this pattern and naming convention, Android 4.0 MR1 subsequently became Android 4.1. And so was Android 4.3 MR1 turning into the widely-used Android 4.4 KitKat.

Apparently, the screen-grab of Android 5.1 running on a Nexus 5 smartphone was projected on a large screen in the Devoxx conference. If reports are true, Android 5.1 will not come with significant changes or enhancements when compared to Android 5.0. Furthermore, upcoming Android 5.1 will also be called Lollipop. Nevertheless, it is too early to confirm the changes, but, by the time Android 5.1 gets rolled out to all the compatible Android devices, there could be several changes to the update.

Moving on to Android 5.0 Lollipop update roll out, Android devices like Google Nexus 5, Nexus 10 and the Wi-Fi only variant of the 2012 and 2013 Nexus 7 tablets will be the first set of devices to receive the latest software update over-the-air (OTA). In addition, Motorola has recently announced that it is updating Moto X (Gen 2) and Moto G handsets in the U.S. with Lollipop. Meanwhile, the update for Moto X (Gen 1), Moto G, Moto E, DROID Turbo, DROID Mini, DROID Ultra and DROID Maxx will follow suit shortly, says ZDNet.

Aside from the Nexus and Motorola devices, LG announced this Monday that it will send out v5.0 update to 2014 flagship G3 by this week. Very soon, Android Open Source Project version based CyanogenMod, Paranoid Android and OmniROM are all expected to get their Lollipop update.
