Getting a divorce can be very expensive but a number of former couples made history by choosing to part ways -- and their millions. The priciest divorce settlements in the world usually involved celebrities and business tycoons.

Here are five of the most expensive in history and how much each settlement cost the ex-spouses.

1. Dmitry Rybolovlev and Elena Rybolovleva

NY Daily News wrote that the Russian oligarch who owns the soccer club AS Monaco, as well as a fertilizer empire, was ordered by the judge to pay his former wife $4.5 billion, which is a huge chunk of his $12.8 billion wealth.

2. Neil Diamond and Marcia

After two and a half decades of marriage, the singer and his wife decided to divorce in 1996 after rumors surfaced that Neil was having extramarital affairs. Reportedly, Diamond paid a settlement of $150 million.

3. Michael Jordan and Juanita

CNBC reported that the basketball legend and his wife split in 2006 after 17 years of marriage. Reportedly, Jordan settled for $168 plus a 7-acre estate in Chicago. He also gave up custody over their three kids.

4. Alec Wildenstein and Jocelyn Perisse

Jocelyn found Alec cheating on her with a younger woman, so she filed for divorce. Jocelyn reportedly received $2.5 billion plus $100 million every year for 13 years.

5. Roman and Irina Abramovich

The Russian billionaire was ordered to pay $300 million in 2007. At the time, Roman was the 16th richest man on the Forbes list and had a reported net worth of $18.7 billion. Some of the assets forwarded to his former wife also included mansions, a private jet and a yacht.

These high-profile divorce settlements should serve as a lesson for anyone to sign a prenuptial agreement before getting married. Anyone else we should add to this list? Let us know.
