For decades celebrities and addiction have been intertwined. As many have remained addicted some have sadly passed away, blighting the promise of their careers. There are, however, very notable celebrities who have admitted to their addictions and overcome them before it was too late. Some of them are listed below:

Oprah Winfrey - There are two stories that surfaced relating to the famous talk show host's drug addiction. One was an unforgettable moment in the 1990s when she tearfully admitted in her talk show that she had smoked cocaine during her 20s. The other one was a more recent allegation in a tell-all book by former boyfriend that Winfrey was a regular cocaine user in the 80s and was under the influence while on the air.

Angelina Jolie - In her 1998 interview, the A-list actress revealed that she has tried "just about every drug possible," including cocaine, heroin, LSD and ecstasy. She has given up drugs long ago and now celebrates the peak of her career being an Oscar-winning actress and a passionate humanitarian.

Robert Downey Jr. - In the years 1996 to 2001, the actor was arrested a number of times and made several trips to the rehab and prison. The actor developed a serious problem with drugs by the age of 22 and has battled hard against it. Since he was released from rehab on 2002, the actor has made very promising improvements. Now Downey enjoys the result of his clean Hollywood comeback as projects for the brilliant actor are lined up left and right.

Drew Barrymore - Even before Lindsay Lohan made headlines, Drew was already smoking cigarettes, was an alcoholic, and was addicted to cocaine at the age 13. The actress went to rehab twice and at age 14, she even attempted suicide. But the wild days are over, and now she is considered one of the finest young actresses in Hollywood.

Robin Williams - Some might find it hard to believe that the comedian known for his family friendly films have suffered cocaine addiction. At the beginning of his career, Williams was a certified cokehead. What woke him up? The death by drug overdose of fellow comedian John Belushi. He then confined himself to a rehab center and in return, Williams established himself not only as a comedic actor but movies like "Good Will Hunting" and "The Fisher King" showcased his versatility. He also won an Oscar for Best Supporting actor.
