Long-awaited Apple iMac is back in the news. According to earlier reports, the upcoming Apple iMac notebook will be super slim and will feature a 12-inch display. However, Jack March has now revealed that a 27-inch 5K Retina Apple iMac is in the offing, which will feature an impressive screen resolution of 5,120 x 2,880 pixels.

MacRumors believes that the Jack March report is legitimate, which means that the aforementioned iMac will be unveiled as early as the coming month. The unnamed source apparently has information on Apple's plans and says the Retina iMac will be introduced in the next press event. The same source also reported that the 27-inch iMac variant is the only notebook to get Retina 5K display. It is worth noting that the 5K resolution of 5,120 x 2,880 pixels was sighted in the code pertaining to OSX Yosemite several months back. Notably, the current-generation 27-inch iMac comes with 2,560 × 1,440 pixels resolution, therefore, the upcoming Retina iMac doubles the resolution of its predecessor, guaranteeing a killer viewing experience.

According to the same source, the 27-inch model will be powered by the same Haswell processor, clocked at 4.0 GHz Core i7-4790K. This is predominantly because the production of the next-generation Broadwell processors has hit a roadblock and cannot be expected to be ready until mid-2015. Furthermore, Apple will also be using AMD graphics for the upcoming iMac models. However, the general design and port configuration will be identical to the current-generation device.

Meanwhile, 9to5Mac reports that Dell has also announced a 5K display technology of their own. The configuration of DisplayPort 1.3 is confirmed, along with support for the new 5K resolution and improved 4K display performance. In addition, according to MacRumours, connectivity will be easier, thanks to its built-in capability that allows single-cable uncompressed video at the killer 5K resolution.

If the recent reports are true, the Retina iMacs are in the final evaluation stage at Apple, thus corroborating the October release. Also, 9to5Mac states that "the unveiling of the Dell monitor turns the idea of a Retina iMac from a pipe-dream to a real possibility."
