How Serbia, Brazil Got to the Quarterfinals of the 2014 FIBA World Cup

Serbia opened the FIBA Basketball World Cup with an easy 85-64 victory over African squad Egypt before falling to France in a nail-biter, 73-74. They bounced back against Iran, 83-70 but had to settle for 3rd place in the group phase with losses to Brazil and Spain, 73-89 in their final two matches in the preliminary stage. The 2-3 win-loss card was enough to advance however and they showed that they are better than their record with a convincing 90-72 win over Greece in their first knockout game. Greece was an undefeated 5-0 entering the Round of 16 match-up versus Serbia.

Meanwhile, Brazil had a more impressive stretch in the group stage a close win over France, 65-to-63 to start off their basketball world championships campaign. Aside from their win over Serbia, they also had big margin victories over Iran, 79-50 and Egypt, 128-65. Their sole loss came versus powerhouse and host Spain, 63-82.

How Serbia and Brazil Match-Up Against Each Other

Curiously, Serbia and Brazil had never met before their group phase meeting in the 2014 FIBA World Cup although Yugoslavia (which Serbia is formerly part of) is 10-2 all-time versus Brazil in international competitions.

In last Wednesday's Group A meeting, it was the Brazilian veteran pair of Marquinhos Vieira (21 points on 6/9 three-point shooting) and Leandro Barbosa (16 points) who top-scored for the team. Brazilian bigs Tiago Splitter (10 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists) of the San Antonio Spurs and Anderson Varejao (4 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocked shots) of the Cleveland Cavaliers also had great games.

For Serbia, which only shot 42.1 per cent from the field (24/57 field goals), only three players-- Milos Teodosic (14 points), Miroslav Raduljica (11 points), Stefan Markovoic (10 points)—finished in double-figure scoring.

Serbia actually had the lead, 64-60 at the end of the penultimate quarter but Brazil limited the Serbians to just 9 points in the final canto and scored 21 markers to get the victory.
