14-year-old Lucas Etter broke the five-second mark to shatter the world record for the fastest time in solving a standard 3x3x3 Rubik’s Cube in the River Hill Fall 2015 event held at the River Hill High School in Clarksville, Maryland in the United States.

The speedcuber from Kentucky has set the new mark, completing the puzzle in 4.904 seconds in the semifinals of the River Hill Fall 2015 event and beating the previous record set by fellow American Collin Burns, who clocked in 5.25 seconds in solving the 3x3x3 Rubik’s Cube.

The World Cube Association (WCA) has confirmed the new world record set by Etter, who also owns the world record for the 2x2 Cube average at 1.51 seconds set in the final round of the Music City Speedsolving 2015 event held in Nashville, Tennessee in the U.S.

Previous world record-holders include Mats Valk (5.55 seconds at the Doylestown Spring 2015 event) from the Netherlands and Feliks Zedegs (5.66 seconds at the World Championship 2015) from Australia and are among the elite speedcubers all-time in the 3x3x3 Rubik’s Cube competition.

The WCA is widely recognised as the world governing body for “competitions for all puzzles” including the Rubik’s Cube puzzles and “all other puzzles that are played by twisting the sides”, according to their website.

Keaton Ellis, also from the U.S., actually broke the world record first, in the second round of the River Hill Fall 2015, clocking in at 5.09 seconds but got beat by Etter by 0.18 seconds.
