Jarryd Hayne continues to spend his regular season on the San Francisco 49ers practice squad, but that may change soon as the team continues to struggle and underperform.

The 49ers have suffered another lopsided loss after a 29-13 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday (AEDT Monday), giving the team more reason to recall Hayne into the team’s active squad. According to Kristen Tsiamis of the Sydney Morning Herald, Hayne’s chances at making a return to the 49ers have “improved,” with coach Jim Tomsula being “disappointed in the performance” of the team.

Bruce Ellington and veteran running back Shaun Draughn, two players who replaced Hayne in the active roster, displayed disappointing performances. Tomsula has accepted that he will consider all players on a week-by-week basis, which gives Hayne the chance to wear his No. 38 jersey once again.

San Francisco waived Hayne after fumbling three punts in as many as six games, and then was signed into the team’s practice squad after clearing off waivers. But even without Hayne, the 49ers still continue their fumbling woes, with Ellington coughing up a kickoff return, which harmlessly went out of bounds.

“When Bruce Ellington fumbled on a kickoff return, all of Australia demanded he be crucified the way Jarryd Hayne was after his fumbles, never mind that Ellington's fumble went harmlessly out of bounds and the 49ers maintained possession,” Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News wrote.

Hayne is expected to stay with the 49ers for the rest of the season despite not suiting up during game days. The Australian rugby league star was linked to reports about returning to the National Rugby League, but Hayne has ended any speculations, saying that he intends to continue his NFL dream with the 49ers.
