As various states across the country continue to confirm cases of the concerning Omicron variant, Covid-19 vaccinations are soaring, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The daily change in vaccination reported by the CDC on Dec. 2 was 2,181,735, the biggest daily total since May. It is important to note, however, that around half of the reported doses were booster shots. Around a third were first doses.

According to health officials, the inequality between the vaccinated and unvaccinated is causing new variants to surface. Vaccination rates do appear to be increasing as a whole but at a leisurely pace.

Vaccine manufacturers such as AstraZeneca, Moderna, and Pfizer have stated they are looking for ways to modify their shots to better combat the Omicron variant.

While discussing his plan to limit infections, President Joe Biden clarified that his plan “doesn’t include shutdowns or lockdowns”, but rather “widespread vaccinations and boosters and testing a lot more.”

The Omicron variant has been confirmed in five states, with fice cases alone recently confirmed in New York.
