What keeps people logging on to Facebook?
90% of Facebook users log in to Facebook at least once a day to play games according to a survey done by Inside Network. Most of the games that are very successful in Facebook are developed by Zynga. An example is the very popular game Farmville which allows people to plant virtual crops and harvest them to earn gold coins which they can use to purchase more seeds for planting.
The survey showed that 28% of the respondents stated they play games in Facebook once a day while an overwhelming 62% said that log in to Facebook multiple times to play these games. The most popular game played by the respondents in Farmville saying they log in to Facebook multiple times a day to play it.
Zynga is benefiting from the said high number of Facebook gamers playing their games. They earn by selling things that can be used in the game for various reasons. Zynga will probably generate $450 million or higher this year for this.
Playing games like Farmville for a long time make people not play other games thinking that they have already invested too much in the game. Because of Farmville, people who play it are attached to it on a high extent. The number of people who play Farmville on a daily basis is quite astonishing at 64 million.
ThinkEquity stated that in the United States alone, consumers are going to spend as much as $1.6 billion for virtual goods in Facebook games.
However, the said survey may prove to be very unreliable since the respondents who answered it were given the initial question asked by the survey that someone should only answer it if one has been an active player of social games on Facebook, according to Michael Pachter who is an analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities. The survey had over 1,800 respondents.
