Jason Day has received the support of the Qantas Wallabies ahead of his bid to become world No. 1 at the BMW Championship in Illinois. Day, currently ranked as world No. 3, could climb atop the leaderboard of the world golf rankings with a win at the third leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs, given that World No. 1 Rory McIlroy, and Jordan Spieth do not finish as runner ups.

Day, who failed to overtake the world ranking’s top spot at Deutsche Bank Championship earlier this month, has been backed by the Wallabies to win in Lake Forest. The Wallabies coach Michael Cheika said Day’s recent display of consistency in playing golf inspires his squad ahead of their 2015 Rugby World Cup opener against Fiji.

"It is inspiring to all Australians and we as a playing group are very proud of him and what he is achieving,” Cheika said, SBS reported. “We know there are more big wins to come for Jason and wish him well."

Day, on the other hand, wishes the Wallabies the same in the upcoming quadrennial rugby tournament. Day believes the Wallabies have what it takes to win the World Cup and prove themselves the best in the world.

Day, who won this year’s US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits earlier last month, will have a tight competition in the early round of the BMW Championship at Conway Farm golf club. For the third event in a row, the 27-year-old Australian and world No. 2 Spieth will spend more time together, along with Rickie Fowler, who jumped to No. 3 in the FedEx Cup overall standings with his win in Boston.

But despite an early neck-to-neck race to the top of the world golf rankings, Day is confident heading into the BMW Championship. Day said ever since the US Open in June, he gained the mentality to win tournaments.

"When I was playing some really good golf at the PGA, The Barclays, I felt like I was the guy to beat," Day said, the Chicago Tribune reported. "That's the mentality I have to get all the time."

Meanwhile, Day has been the favourite to win the third of four FedEx Cup playoffs event as he leads the overall standings in the season finale tournament. Oddsmakers from Las Vegas has Day at 2-1 odds to win the tournament this week, while Spieth is closely behind at 3-1.
