Verizon app finds misplaced, missing mobile device
Verizon Wireless, the largest mobile phone service provider in the U.S., is offering its millions of subscribers a free app that finds a misplaced or missing mobile device.
Called Mobile Recovery, the online and phone-based application also enables customers to remotely lock a lost device or erase its contacts, sound an alarm even if the device is on silent or vibrate mode, and locate the device via GPS if it is turned on or within range of Verizon Wireless.
If the customer's phone is not recovered via the app, Verizon Wireless will replace it the next day.
The app comes with a Backup Assistant that enables mobile users to save a copy of the phone's address book to a secure Website. When the device is lost, the user can still restore the list of contacts by downloading the copy online.
The Backup Assistant also can be set to backup information on the device daily, manually or automatically save information, or access the online copy of the address book. Contacts in the online address book can be edited and the revised list can be sent to the device with just a click.
John Mara, executive director of marketing for Verizon Wireless, said the Mobile Recovery app helps secure customers' private information and their phones.
The app can be downloaded on compatible phones, including several models of Droid smartphones by Motorola and select models from BlackBerry, HTC and Samsung. Verizon Wireless customers can download and install the app by texting "GETMR" to 6967.
