Toshiba Australia to release Android tablets
Smart pads set for October release
Toshiba Australia says that it plans to release its "smart pads" starting October. The company says that its tablets will run on Google Android and Windows. In an interview with APC Mag, Mark Whittard, Toshiba Australia's chief was vague in his description of the device, saying that the product is "a work in progress."
In the interview, Whittard also provided a preview of the device, which is said to look like an iPad at first glance. The tablet has features such as multitouch display and USB and HDMI outputs.
However, Whittard says that Toshiba is not entering the Android smartphone market for now. The company has several smartphones on the design stages. However, when asked whether the company would release smartphones anytime soon, Whittard answered with "probably not."
"I think that's already a significantly challenged market among vendors and price-points and margins. I'd never say never - we're constantly looking at it. But the product would have to have something unique and cut-through (before we would) think about launching it into the local market," he said.
