Tiktok says its got over one billion active users

Video-sharing app TikTok announced Monday in a blog post that it has one billion monthly global users.

“TikTok has become a beloved part of life for people around the world because of the creativity and authenticity of our creators,” the Chinese-owned company said in the post. “Our global community is remarkable in its ability to reach millions of people, across generations. From music, food, beauty and fashion to art, causes, and everything in between, culture truly starts on TikTok.”

This means that about one in every seven people around the world are scrolling through the app on their devices.

TikTok was released in September 2016. By January 2018, the app had 55 million users, CNBC noted.

Its platform saw major growth during the past year when users were stuck at home with limited entertainment options due to lockdowns linked to the global pandemic. In August, TikTok released its first detailed monthly active user information, revealing its almost 700 million active global users. In a month, it grew another 300 million.

TikTok’s reported growth despite a recent report claiming that the app pushes minors into a rabbit hole of drug-related and sexually explicit content.
