Telecommunications companyTelstra has issued a warning to its customers to alert them of a credit card scam.

The company announced that hoaxers are sending out a phishing email pretending to be from BigPond and asking customers to give over their credit card details.

In a statement, Darren Kane, Telstra officer for internet trust and safety, said, "Telstra and BigPond will never send an email requesting passwords, account verification, credit card details or other personal details by asking you to click on a link."

Kane added that such information should only be provided if a request is expected, or someone has initiated such a request.

Last week, it was revealed that members of Australian Central have been targeted with similar scams. The thieves, using fake credit cards and contact information, were said to have attempted to gain access to details of people's bank accounts and credit cards.

The company recommended that customers regularly update their computers with the latest spyware and virus protection software.
