The search for the role of the new Peter Parker in the “Spider-Man” reboot is reportedly down to two actors. Asa Butterfield and Tom Holland are said to be the only young stars left as contenders.

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have reportedly narrowed down their list of possible young actors to portray the role of the web slinger in the “Spider-Man” reboot. Galactic News One noted Badass Digest writer Devin Faraci’s post on his Twitter page regarding the casting update.

A few days back it was reported that Asa Butterfield (“Ender’s Game”) was the main contender as Peter Parker. Now it remains unclear who among the two young actors will grab the role of Spider-Man.

Movie scoopster Umberto Gonzalez once said on his Instagram post that Asa Butterfield has been Marvel and Sony’s top choice for the role of Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man since the beginning. Comicbookmovie likewise quoted a source who claimed that Butterfield may have been cast already since he's been Marvel's choice as Spider-Man “since day one.” However, per Gonzalez the actor’s agency offered no comment when asked for confirmation.

Asa Butterfield and Tom Holland (“The Impossible”) were among the five actors supposedly listed by Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures as contenders for the role of the high school web slinger in the “Spider-Man” reboot. Natt Wolf (“The Fault In Our Stars”), Timothee Chalamet (“Interstellar”) and Liam James (“The Way Way Back”) were initially rumoured to have been shortlisted.

The Wrap had mentioned last week that these five young stars were not even given test offers. However, writer Jeff Sneider said that Marvel and Sony had planned to make the test offers then and that the result will be announced three weeks after the offers have been made.

The new Peter Parker will be making his debut through a cameo appearance in “Captain America: Civil War.” Spider-Man will be appearing in the May 6, 2016 sequel prior to starring in his solo film in July 2017. The “Spider-Man” reboot, which is rumoured to have been given the title “Spider-Man: The New Avengers,” marks the web slinger’s introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
