Rebekah Brooks, the Former News International Chief was charged by British prosecutors for obstruction in the ongoing investigation about phone hacking in the British newspapers owned by media mogul by Rupert Murdoch.

Rebekah Brooks was not the only one accused of these charges. The charges are also filed against Rebekah Brooks' husband, Charles and other four employees which consists of her driver, assistant, a security guard, and the head of security for News International. News International is the subsidiary which publishes the newspapers of Rupert Murdoch. Rebekah Brooks is currently facing three counts of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and the other four suspects are facing two counts with the same charge.

As for her reaction regarding this charge, Rebekah Brooks stated that she is "baffled and angered" not only because of the charges but also because of the decision to include the people that are close to her. In an interview outside her lawyer's office, Brooks was quoted stating "One day the details of this case will emerge, and people will see today as nothing more than an expensive sideshow -- a waste of public money as a result of an unjust and weak decision."

Aside from that, there are news reports stating that Rebekah Brooks is planning to challenge the charging decision due to the fact that current prosecutor was a victim of tabloid reporting. Alison Levitt QC, the principal legal adviser to the Director of Publich Prosecutions Keir Starmer was a victim of tabloid reporting five years ago. The reports in the tabloid revealed that Ms. Levitt was having an affair with her peer. News of the World was one of the tabloids that reported this news. The legal team of Rebekah Brooks is now examining this move stating that "It is being reviewed by her legal team."

According to the information provided by the Crown Prosecution Service, the maximum sentence that could be given is life in prison.
