RailCorp offers free WiFi
Rail operator to provide free Internet at Circular Quay station in Sydney
NSW rail network operator RailCorp offers travelers at Sydney's Circular Quay station WiFi Internet access free of charge for a three month trial period.
The free Internet access will be available on platforms one and two of the station starting from September 6 to the end of November 2010. Users can only log on for 20 minutes per device per session (separate morning and afternoon sessions). The service also has a download limit of 50MB per session.
"A the trial goes on, RailCorp will be seeking feedback to assess the take-up rates and overall response from customers. We hope that this trial proves successful, so that it would be possible to extend free WiFi services to other stations on the network," John Robertson, NSW minister for transport.
The trial at the train station comes after free WiFi was introduced on the Manly Ferry in June this year. Robertson said that the response to the free Wifi service had been overwhelming.
"More than 40,000 commuters have started to log on since the new service commenced in June and we are looking forward to see how this might translate to one of our major city train stations."
"The introduction of WiFi across the entire CityRail network will take time to implement as we trial, refine and rollout a suitable and sustainable public transport WiFi system for our customers," a spokesman for RailCorp said.
"There are no current plans to put WiFi on trains and no decision has been made on cost for service.
