Fans of the “Overlord” anime will have a lot to be excited for next year following the announcement of the show’s fourth season and its first official video game adaptation in the form of “Overlord: Escape from Nazarick.”

In a recent announcement on Steam, Japanese publisher Kadokawa revealed that it will work with developer Engines to create “Escape from Nazarick,” a Metroidvania-style 2D action side-scrolling game starring Clementine, an antagonist from the very early parts of the “Overlord” story.

In the game, Clementine finds herself inside the Great Tomb of Nazarick. Unarmed and without any memories, she must find a means to regain fragments of her old self while searching for a way to escape the tomb. Along the way, minions of the Overlord himself will try to stop Clementine from escaping through any means possible.

“Escape from Nazarick” will appear very familiar to anyone who has played a Metroidvania game. Players will be able to use Clementine’s superhuman agility to their advantage. Run, jump and maneuver through obstacles with a grappling hook and use a variety of weapons to defeat anything that stands in the way.

Magic abilities appear to be tied directly to the game’s progression as players may need specific spells to pass certain areas, much like in many other games in the genre.

Narrative-wise, “Escape from Nazarick” will explore Clementine’s story as she slowly collects her lost memories that will hopefully shed some light on what happened to her in the main storyline. The developers worked closely with “Overlord” author Kugane Maruyama in order to preserve the spirit of the series without compromising on gameplay.

It will be interesting to see if the events in “Escape from Nazarick” will have any bearing on the future of the “Overlord” series, whether in the form of actual lore integration or mere references to the game from the main characters.

So far, the “Overlord” light novel has 14 volumes and the 15th one is currently in the works. Meanwhile, the anime adaptation’s fourth season is slated to release in 2022. This season will cover the Holy Kingdom arc.

“Overlord: Escape from Nazarick” is due to release at an unspecified date next year.
