The Philadelphia Eagles have signed Ryan Mathews to a three-year deal on the same day they agreed to a long-term contract with DeMarco Murray. The pair of running backs is expected to be featured highly in Chip Kelly’s offensive system and the duo will be considered one of the dangerous threats on the backfield in the upcoming season of the National Football League, or NFL.

Ian Rapoport, insider for NFL.com. reported the deal, with the amount of contract unstated, on Twitter.

The new-look Eagles have now replaced LeSean McCoy, who was traded to the Buffalo Bills earlier in the offseason with a pair of veteran running backs as they also failed to get veteran running back Frank Gore to the Indianapolis Colts. Early reports stated that Gore was willing to sign with the Eagles but reconsidered his options. Mathews was the 12th overall pick by the San Diego Chargers in the 2010 NFL Draft and player there from 2010 to 2014.

Mathews has struggled with ankle and knee injuries throughout his stint in San Diego playing in just six games in the 2014 season. In games he played 14 or more games, he has registered 1,091 rushing yards on 222 catches with 6 touchdowns in 2011 and 1,255 rushing yards on 285 catches with 6 touchdowns in 2013. In six games played with San Diego in 2014, Mathews helped the Chargers to a 5-1 record.

San Diego’s general manager Tom Telesco described Mathews as a “talented football player” and that the team is different with him on the field. The Chargers however decided that Mathews was too much of a health risk and would rather lose him in free agency.
