In one of the latest signings in the National Football League, or NFL, in the 2015 offseason, the Oakland Raiders have signed quarterback Christian Ponder to a one year deal. The 27 year old QB will be reunited with Bill Musgrave, the new Raiders’ offensive coordinator and who coached Ponder in his time with the Minnesota Vikings.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed according to NFL.com but Ponder have agreed to the short-term deal in Oakland after spending his first four seasons with the Vikings, which drafted Ponder the 12th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Ponder, who was the Vikings’ starter in 2012 and 2013 but lost the spot to Josh Freeman and Teddy Bridgewater, is expected to back-up second year QB Derek Carr. For his career, Ponder has recorded 6,658 passing yards on 632 of 1,057 completions, or 59.8 percentage with 38 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.

Ponder’s best season in the league came in his second year in Minnesota when he had 2,935 passing yards on 300 of 481 completions, or 62.1 percentage, with 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He had a total quarterback rating of 81.2 that season, his career-best in four years with the Vikings. Ponder’s arrival in Oakland will likely mean that the Raiders will release Matt Schaub, who was one of the QBs in the rotation for the Raiders last season.

The Raiders team welcomed Ponder on Twitter after the official signing.
