Ndamukong Suh is set to leave the Detroit Lions and play for the Miami Dolphins in the next seasons of National Football League. One of the best defensive players in the league, Suh is expected to sign a huge contract of $114 million for six years making him one of the highest paid players in the entire league.

The Lions will lose one of their best players overall and their leader on defence. Detroit chose not to put the “franchise tag” on Suh earlier in the offseason and they will now pay for it dearly as they lose Suh to free agency for nothing. The contract between the Dolphins and Suh will be officially negotiated by Tuesday when the new league season begins. The Lions risked of losing Suh by not tagging him earlier in the offseason as the franchise balked at paying him around $27 million for the 2015 season.

Suh’s contract ranks third overall among all contracts in the league with only Joe Flacco at $120.6 million and Jay Cutler at $126.7 having bigger contracts than the defensive player, who will earn about $19 million per season on the multi-year deal. Suh is guaranteed to be paid $60 million by the Dolphins. Among defensive players, Suh’s average salary per season for 2015 is now more than that of other top players like Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt at $16.6 million, Buffalo Bills defensive end Mario Williams at $16 million and Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy at $15.89 million.

Suh was drafted second overall in the 2010 Draft playing all five of his years with the Lions. The 28 year old is has made five NFL Pro Bowls in 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Suh was also named to the NFL First Team All Pro four times in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014. The Dolphins acquisition of Suh comes as a surprise as they were not one of the teams prominently chasing Suh in the 2015 offseason. Other teams which were mentioned trying to acquire the star defensive player are the Oakland Raiders, Washington Redskins, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Chicago Bears.
