Nextgen Networks announced that it had reached speeds of up to100 Gigabits per second (Gbps) integration between IP routing infrastructure and optic equipment over its fibre-optic network. The company says that it is a necessary move for the delivery of a number of broadband-based services.

Phil Sykes, Nextgen Networks' managing director, said that it was not unusual to transport data over an optic-fibre network at such speeds. However, he says that the manipulation of packets do not occurr at such speeds, instead slowing down to only 10Gbps. The company claims that the capability to make the IP routing infrastructure operational at the same speeds as the fibre-optic transport is a regional first.

"A big boost to capacity is only part of the story. What this technology really does is manage the packet-by-packet quality of service at 100 Gigabits per second. A necessity to underpin delivery of the new technology types of services including advanced and remote medical imaging," Sykes added in a statement.

NextGen demonstrated the speed of the solution using the same platform that the company used for its government contract for the provision of backhaul infrastructure to regional areas.
