Victoria is looking to become Australia's nanotechnology epicenter.

The state unveiled the Melbourne Center for Nanofabrication, a $63 million site that would serve as the core research lab within the Australian National Fabrication Facility.

The center is a joint project between the Federal government, CSIRO, Minifab and educational institutions such as Swinburne University of Technology, Monash University, Deakin University, La Trobe University, RMIT University.

The center will be open to academic researchers and the private sector. The facility will be the site groundbreaking work in telecommunications, which is fitting considering that Melbourne is the recognized leader in the sector. The pharmaceutical and medical industries are also expected to benefit from the facility.

The state's status as the sector's research and operational skills center in the country was given a boost when NBN Co announced that it would base its operations center in the area.

The research center boasts of the largest clean-room in the southern hemisphere. This will enable scientists to perform innovative work on the microscopic level to create the next incarnation of technology.
