A 30-year-old woman in India's Uttar Pradesh state is accused of killing three of her four daughters last week by throwing them into a pond after getting into an argument with her husband.

The woman, identified as Noorjahan Nisan, was arrested Saturday in her home village of Laxmipur Babu in the district of Kushinagar, newspaper The Times of India reported.

Nisan allegedly drowned her three children in a pond at Gaura Chowk Friday night after she had a fight with her husband — who lived abroad — over the phone, the report said.

"In a fit of rage, she packed all her belongings and left for Laxmipur Babu in Kushinagar with her four daughters. She, however, threw the girls in a nearby pond and fled the scene," said station house officer Shuman Kumar Mishra of the Kateya police station — which has jurisdiction of where the crime allegedly happened.

The deceased were identified as 2-year-old Saheba Khatoon, 3-year-old Nusana Khatoon and 8-year-old Gulabsa Khatoon, the officer said.

According to police, Nisan's fourth daughter, 5-year-old Afrina Khatoon, managed to survive as she was spotted by some villagers and rescued.

"Luckily, the villagers heard their screams and rescued one of them," Mishra said.

Police received information of the incident at around 9 p.m. on the night of the incident, according to the officer.

The three girls' bodies were fished out from the pond and sent to a hospital for post-mortem, as per The Times of India.

Nisan was arrested after police learned of the incident, according to Mishra. He added that the case was being investigated.

A similar incident occurred in Los Angeles, California, in April when a 30-year-old woman allegedly confessed to killing her three children.

Liliana Carrillo admitted to drowning her children — 3-year-old Joanna Denton Carrillo, 2-year-old Terry and 6-month-old Sierra — supposedly in order to protect them from their father, her ex-boyfriend Erik Denton.

"I didn't want them to be further abused. I loved my kids. I wish this didn't have to be the case, but I promised to protect them," Carrillo said.

Carrillo and Denton were in the middle of a custody battle when the three young children were found dead by their maternal grandmother inside their Reseda, California apartment on April 10.

Police labeled Carrillo a person of interest, and she was arrested in Tulare County, nearly 200 miles north of the scene, after she allegedly carjacked a pickup truck.
