Redmond-based tech giant Microsoft is reportedly working on a hybrid phone-tablet, Surface Duo 2, and according to a recent report, the device with up-to-date specs and features is going to release later this year.

The latest information about Microsoft Surface Duo 2 came from Windows Central. According to the site, the device -- which has the codename Zeta -- would “launch in the second half of 2021, most likely in September or October.”

Unlike its predecessor, the said device will be more advanced in various ways, the site stated.

It said that the new version of Surface Duo will “continue evolving the dual-screen form factor.” As for its specs, the site shared that the next-generation hybrid phone-tablet would house the flagship SoC for this year, indicating SoC that it will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 with 5G features. This is the same chipset inside Samsung Galaxy S21, OnePlus 9, and other Android flagship devices.

Aside from that, the device is believed to feature NFC that would help users facilitate wireless payments with ease. The report also noted that the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 would have an external camera system with a bump, which is meant to get better photos. Consumers can expect minor design tweaks from the upcoming device.

According to the report, the next-generation Surface Duo would have the same shape and size as its predecessor. The upcoming device is also believed to feature slightly bigger displays with rounded corners. It would also sport thinner bezels for a more streamlined finish, the report revealed.

Microsoft has not yet revealed the price of the rumored hybrid phone-tablet. It would be interesting to know whether the tech giant would retail the next-generation Surface Duo at a price higher than that of the first-generation device, considering its rumored improved specs and features. Currently, the Surface Duo retails at $1,399.

If the report's release window is accurate, the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 would compete against Apple's iPhone 13 series, which is expected to launch in mid-September.

Google is also anticipated to launch its first foldable Pixel phone at around the same time, according to BGR. Samsung is believed to be preparing for the launch of its Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 sometime in August of this year.

Consumers, however, should temper their expectations since these details are not official. And, like any other leaks, this information is still highly speculative at this stage.
