Microsoft reports record quarter
Growth due to launch of Office 2010
Microsoft, the technology company, reports record revenue for its fiscal fourth quarter, thereby beating rival Apple in terms of revenue generated. The company, which also showed substantial growth in profits, says the figures are due to the launch of Office 2010. In spite of the attribution, Microsoft did not provide sales data for the new software.
The company reports net income of $4.52 billion and $16.04 billion of revenue for the quarter. The results exhibit an increase of 48 percent and 22 percent from the same period last year. The figures show 26 percent growth for the company's OEM licenses. It's PC unit, on the other hand, exhibited growth between 22 and 24 percent.
Microsoft launched Office 2010 during the quarter. The new version of its flagship Office product helped Microsoft's Business Division generate revenue of $5.25 billion. The figure is an improvement from last year's $4.57 billion. During the same period last year, the company reported a 51 percent rise in consumer growth. Microsoft's Business Division reported revenue growth of 15 percent.
Microsoft's Server and Tools business grew to $4.01 billion compared to last year's figure of $3.52 billion. The division experienced record growth of 14 percent. Windows Server, SQL Server, and System Center all experienced double digit growth.
Entertainment devices reported $1.6 billion in revenue compared to $1.26 billion last year. Microsoft sold 1.5 million units of its Xbox. The company's membership for its Xbox Live service is now at over 25 million. The company says that it made more money from its Xbox Live Digital Marketplace than from subscriptions.
Microsoft's online services business grew to $565 million compared to $501 million during the same period a year ago. This is due to a 19 percent growth in online advertising.
