The Miami Dolphins have fired defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle after a slow 1-3 start in the 2015 NFL regular season. Lou Anarumo will replace Coyle as defensive coordinator and the firing comes days after the team let go of head coach Joe Philbin.

The 59-year-old Coyle joined the Dolphins as defensive coordinator in January 2012 and was the defensive back coach for the Cincinnati Bengals for eight years before landing in Miami. He also served as a defensive coach for various collegiate squads from 1978 to 2000 before moving up to the NFL.

Ian Rapoport and Albert Breer of NFL.com both confirmed the coaching change in Miami.

The 49-year-old Anuramo, who was also with the Dolphins since 2012, was promoted to Coyle’s previous position after serving as the defensive backs coach. Anuramo is an experienced coach, in various positions, for different college squads since 1989. He was the running backs coach for Wagner (1989 to 1990), assistant defensive backs coach at Syracuse (1990 to 1991), defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach at U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (1992 to 1994), assistant head coach at Harvard (1995 to 2000), defensive backs coach at Marshall (2001 to 2003) and Purdue (2004 to 2011).

The Dolphins beat the Washington Redskins (17-10) in their opening game this season but has suffered three consecutive losses to the Jacksonville Jaguars (23-20), Buffalo Bills (41-14) and New York Jets (27-14). Miami is ranked among the worst defences in the league giving up 399.5 total yards per game (30th in the NFL) and 160.5 rushing yards per game (32nd in the league).
