The release of a brutal gang rapist in India from a correctional facility has led to public outrage that took the form of street protests across the capital city of New Delhi. The decision by the New Delhi High Court has been strongly condemned by the victim’s parents, who also took part in the protests on Sunday in front of India Gate.

The accused who has been allowed to walk free is the youngest of the six men who participated in the heinous act. Of the five other men, one had already died and the other four have received death sentences. The sixth accused, who was reportedly a minor at the time of the incident but is now 20 years old, has been awarded three years of imprisonment, which is being considered a mockery to the Indian justice system.

The rapist will be under the supervision of a non-governmental agency. The Delhi High court heard a petition on Friday that demanded a stay on his release. Despite the pressure from the public to keep him in custody for a longer period of time, the court has passed the order of his release.

"We want justice for our daughter," the mother of the victim told reporters at the protest site. "I have come out on the streets because I am very disappointed today. We don't know if we will ever get justice now. Our justice system has left us disillusioned."

The protests were joined by thousands of students holding banners and placards. The large scale protests in the capital city were reminiscent of the protests that were held three years back, after the Nirbhaya incident took place. Nirbhaya, meaning fearless, is the title bestowed upon the victim by the people of India.

He has been moved to an undisclosed location where he will be observed. But he is technically no longer in custody," the CNN quoted Delhi state government spokesman Nagendar Sharma as saying.

In 2012, a paramedic student in New Delhi was raped and murdered brutally by six men in a moving bus. The act spanned over several hours in which the victim was not only raped but brutally injured. The victim’s intestines were reportedly brought out by inserting a metal rod into her and the cruel act was allegedly done by the youngest rapist. Her friend was also beaten up by the men when he tried to protest. The nearly dead woman was thrown out of the bus along with her friend. She was taken to a local hospital, and after the news broke, she was moved to Singapore for treatment, where she died.
