Web site FastUnlockiPhone.com has issued a press release saying that it's offering an unlocked and untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 for $24.99 with a money back guarantee.

The site notes that the 'FastRa1n' tool for jailbreaking Apple's latest operating system update for its mobile devices is worth the price -- instead of paying as much as $12.99 for apps at the Apple App Store, you can use your jailbroken grab apps for free at Cydia.

But it remains to be seen whether the device works. And if it does, it's not even worth the price.

A member of the iPhone Dev Team - a group that offers genuine and free jailbreaking and unlocking software for Apple devices -- confirmed the news to the IB Times that the FastRa1n tool is a FAKE. The member, who uses the name @comex on Twitter, confirmed that FastUnlockiPhone is a scam. Dev Team and other legit sites have been providing the jailbreak tool for free.

Apple fans who were able to successfully download iOS 5 last week despite a server have started jailbreaking their Apple devices.

Thanks to the availability of a beta version of iOS 5 months ago, The Dev-Team Blog announced released a tethered redsn0w jailbreak for iOS 5 immediately on launch day.

The Redsn0w version is a tethered jailbreak, which means that rebooting the jailbroken iOS device would need the assistance of a Windows or Mac computer.

Members of the legitimate jailbreak community have indicated an untethered jailbreak is on its way. An untethered jailbreak saves the hassles of getting a PC during booting.

For the meantime, only a tethered jailbreak is available. RedSn0w has a new update, the 0.9.9 beta 6 -- which adds Windows compatibility, fixes the iPhone 3GS network crash with 06.15.00 basebands, and addresses few other bugs.

Users would have to download and install the new iTunes 10.5 on their Windows PC or Mac. Before connecting the iOS device to the computer, users should make sure that a backup of everything is available.

These devices are supported:

-- iPod touch 3G

-- iPod touch 4G

-- iPad 1

-- iPhone3GS

-- iPhone4 (GSM)

-- iPhone4 (CDMA)

The present version cannot work yet on devices with A5 processors -- the iPad 2 and the newly released iPhone 4S.

For those unlocking their Apple devices for the first time, jailbreaking is the process of removing the limitations imposed by the manufacturer on devices running the iOS operating system through the use of custom kernels. Jailbreaking, if done successfully, allows users to (A) download and use applications that are otherwise only available for a premium at the Apple App Store or iTunes; and (B) use software not approved by Apple. Although the practice has not been declared illegal, Apple has warned that jailbreaking can void warranties.

Redsn0w has stressed that the present version is only for developers to make sure their apps still work.

On Oct. 14, Apple finally released the iPhone 4S, which sports a 3.5-inch screen; an 8-megapixel, 1080p high-definition camera; an A5 dual-core chip processor that is seven times faster than the graphics processor in the iPhone 4; 512 MB of RAM; two antennae to transmit and receive data; CDMA and GSM connectivity; 8 hours of 3G talk-time; and new applications like Siri and Find My Friends. Siri is a voice-recognition system that turns the device into a hands-free personal assistant. The iPhone 4S uses the iOS 5 platform.

Apple released the free iOS 5 for the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4, the iPod touch (third and fourth generations) the iPad and the iPad 2. Massive demand for the software upgrade had some users complaining of Error 3200 interrupting the upgrading process. Many users have been able to get through after dozens of attempts.

With iOS 5 boasting 200 new features, Apple says it is taking "a mobile operating system that was already years ahead of anything else and moving it even further ahead." Among others, the new features for iOS 5 include a revamp on its notification system; integration with iCloud, the new storage service of Apple; a new messaging service for all i-gadgets; and full integration with Twitter.
