International Kite Day, which is celebrated annually on Jan. 14, originated in the western Indian state of Gujarat.

The day commemorates the harvest of the winter crop and the change from winter to summer. It also celebrates the gods waking up from their winter sleep. In Hindi, the festival is known as Uttarayan. People in many regions of India also call the festival Makar Sankranti, National Today reported.
