‘Fresh Off the Boat’ star Constance Wu lashes out at Casey Affleck’s Oscar nomination

“Fresh Off the Boat” star Constance Wu lashed out at Casey Affleck’s Oscar nomination as Best Actor in a Leading Role for “Manchester By the Sea” recently. In a series of tweets, the 34-year-old actress questioned the film industry if art was about humanity. Wu also said that she was counselled to not talk about this for career’s sake but she was a woman and a human first.

The American actress who plays the role of Jessica Huang in sitcom “Fresh Off the Boat” not only criticised Affleck’s nomination but also media’s reluctance to discuss the same. “Men who sexually harass women 4 OSCAR! Bc good acting performance matters more than humanity, human integrity! Bc poor kid rly needs the help,” she wrote.

Casey Affleck, the Boston actor who is also the brother of Ben Affleck, was accused of sexual harassment by two women who worked with him on documentary “I'm Still Here” in 2010. Producer Amanda White as well as cinematographer Magdalena Gorka had sued him for US$2 million (AU$2.65 million).

In her complaint, Gorka described the incidents as “most traumatising of her career.” She alleged of being subject to “a nearly daily barrage of sexual comments, innuendo, and unwelcome advances.” On the other hand, White also said that she was subject to “uninvited and unwelcome sexual advances” and was grabbed by Affleck “viciously.”

Affleck’s attorney at that time rubbished the allegations put against the actor accusing the women of doing it all of extortion. Both the suits were, however, dismissed after all the parties agreed on settlement on an amount undisclosed.

Besides Oscar nomination, Casey Affleck has already won a Golden Globes award for his performance in “Manchester by the Sea.” Directed by Kenneth Lonergan, the movie, which was about an uncle taking care of his nephew after the death of his father, also starred Michelle Williams, Gretchen Mol, Kyle Chandler and Lucas Hedges in prominent roles.
