Sniffing Dog

It was a Labrador retriever named Bear that helped police discover the porn collection of former Subway spokesperson Jared Foley which led to his arrest. Bear had special training on how to detect electronic devices, especially very small ones.

The K9’s nose could differentiate between a thumb drive and an iPad, notes CNET, through the individual chemical components placed together. It is because electronic devices smell differently from a remote or alarm clock, explains Todd Jordan, the dog’s trainer.

Jordan says that the two-year-old dog is only one of five K9s trained to sniff electronic devices. Once Bear finds something, the dog sits. Then Jordan asks the K9 to point to the exact location of an electronic gadget with his nose.

To train Bear, the dog was sent to a laboratory where the particular odour of an electronic device was isolated for the smell to “imprint” on Bear. The entire process takes six to eight weeks to complete, longer than the training for a narcotics-sniffing dogs because drugs have more obvious smell, says Dennis Clark, Bear’s other trainer.

Clark discloses that Bear and a trainer found some items in the Fogle search missed by human investigators. Each photograph found on the microSD storage card of Fogle, which Bear sniffed, is considered a victim.

The Seattle Police Department now owns Bear after it purchased him for $9,500.

Meanwhile, ABC reports that Fogle filed a lawsuit against the former head of his anti-obesity foundation, Russell Taylor who resigned after he was charged with the production of child porn at his Indianapolis house. Taylor bought the unit with a loan from Fogle who is seeking control of the house because of Taylor’s failure to make any payments on the loan.

Fogle’s sentencing date is on Nov 19. He entered into a plea deal in the earlier part of August after probers filed child pornography and committing sex acts with 14 minors charges against the former Subway spokesman.
