Kojima Productions has debuted an advanced look at the unique lighting and fog system currently being developed for Death Stranding.” In a tech presentation at SIGGRAPH, a graphics demo was revealed for the game. It was built on Guerilla Game’s Decima Engine, the same one used to power “Horizon: Zero Dawn.”

While everyone might have expected a bigger update for “Death Stranding,” fans are still impressed with was revealed. In fact, according to the demo, viewers can pump up the resolution to 4K if they wish. It showcases the familiar cityscape one can see in almost every trailer. This time, however, it features dynamic fog. Some might not care that much for fog, but this is no doubt one large step forward in gaming graphics.

Games Radar notes that this is not just any other fog but height fog. Such presentation gave anticipating gamers a close look at the Decima Engine. The kind of visuals it employs has been described as moody, short but pretty. The 15-second video, which highlights how the fog would look like when it rolls out, is not much. However, there has not been that much for “Death Stranding” in 2017, so this is still good news.

According to IGN, Kohei Ishiyama, graphics programmer of Kojima Productions, discussed the implications of this “height fog mode.” This was custom-created by the studio so it would deliver what they call an atmospheric scattering system. This makes it optimized for rendering lighting as realistic as it can get.

With a promising game like “Death Stranding,” Kojima Productions aims to deliver a new kind of action-packed experience in an open-world layout. While there will be a character based on Norman Reedus, there will also be another based on Mads Mikkelsen and Guillermo del Toro. Hideo Kojima himself had clarified that this will not be a horror game;some humour should be expected.
