D-Link Australia launches its Boxee set top box, which has been given a performance boost, as it aims to compete against TBox and Fetch TV.

The Boxee Box, which is a lopsided set-top box that lets users connect any TV to the Internet, enables televisions to screen content such as streamed movies, music and TV show episodes. D-Link will be providing hardware while Boxee will handle software.

The device is scheduled for launch in the US in mid-November. Idan Cohen, Boxee's co-founder, made an announcement at the Intel Developer Forum, saying that the hardware has been improved with an Intel Atom processor.

The new processor replaces the Nvidia Tegra chip, which was utilized for early development models. Amazon.com is currently taking pre-orders in the US at US$199.99.

The Boxee Box will face competition from the A$129 Apple TV and Telstra's $299 T-Box. Maurice Famularo, marketing director for Boxee, says that pricing has yet to be set in Australia but a price of about A$300 is likely. The Boxee Box is expected to be sold through mass market retail chains.

Reports suggest that Famularo is negotiating with ABC, SBS and other entertainment outlets for content.
