More than half of China's over one billion population use mobile phones as the Ministry of Information Industry reported Tuesday that the number of subscribers has reached to 795.92 million as of end of May 2010.

The figure represents 56.3 percent of the national population of over one billion.

According to the ministry, more than 9.4 million Chinese signed up for mobile phone service in May increasing the total number of new users for this year to 48.5 million.

About 22.6 million of new subscribers in May chose 3G service. The new addition brings the number of 3G users in China this year to 10.3 million.

The largest mobile service provider in the country is still China Mobile serving 549 million customers at the end of May. China Unicom is at second with 155.3 million subscribers followed by China Telecom with 71.5 million.
