Although bullfights have been criticised for being too gory and risking the lives of the matadors, deaths by goring are quite rare, but injuries are common. The last time a matador was gored to his death was almost 30 years ago, but on Saturday, another matador was gored to his death in front of horrified spectators in Spain.

The goring was seen not only by thousands of horrified spectators in Aragon but also by millions of TV viewers since the bullfight was broadcast live on Spanish television. The New York Daily News reports that a bull, named Lorenzo, gored top Spanish matador Victor Barrio on Saturday in Teruel in Aragon as the city celebrates its yearly Feria del Angel.

The bull caught the 29-year-old matador is his side, rolled Barrio over and pinned him to the ground. The killer gore was that on the matador’s chest, reports Mirror. Barrio, awarded San Isidro bullfighter by the Senior Club of Madrid in 2011, was carried by fellow matadors and rushed unconscious to a field hospital in Teruel. The Red Cross said that Barrio was gored through the thorax and abdomen.

Before Barrio became a fully qualified bullfighter in 2012, he worked in a golf course. Bullfighting fans tweeted their condolences to the family of Barrio.
