Pop star Zayn Malik and model Gigi Hadid have broken up after more than two years of dating. The two confirmed the news on Twitter, with Hadid saying she is forever grateful for the love they shared and Malik calling her “an incredible soul.”

The Sun has earlier reported about the split that involves one of the world’s most popular couples, citing work pressure. "ZiGi," as their fans and social media followers affectionately call them, reportedly called it quits earlier this month.

Malik wrote on Twitter that he and Hadid had an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship. He said he has a huge amount of adoration and respect for his ex both as a friend and as a woman, and that she has such an incredible soul. He added that he is grateful to fans for respecting the difficult decision as well as their privacy. He, however, wished the news could have come from them first.

Hadid also shared her thoughts with social media followers by saying that breakup statements usually seem impersonal “because there really is no way to put into words what two people experience together over a few years.” She said she is forever grateful for the love, time and life lessons they shared, adding that she wants nothing but the best for Malik and will continue to support him as a friend. “As for the future, whatever's meant to be will always be,” she wrote.

Fans were quick to react to the breakup, with one saying she does not remember what it’s like to live in a world where the two aren't together. One thanked the former couple for making each other “so happy.” Some labelled their split as #breakupgoals.

Reports of Malik and Hadid becoming an item first surfaced when the model appeared in Malik's "Pillowtalk" video in 2016. They walked the red carpet at the 2016 Met Gala together, and Malik reportedly got a tattoo of Hadid’s eyes.

In an exclusive interview with Mail Online, Hadid’s mother Yolanda gushed over her daughter’s now ex-boyfriend and discussed a possible engagement. She said he was like a son to her. Hadid’s mother said she truly believed they were on their own journey, but she gave little on whether there will be an engagement. “It's not in my hands anymore so I'm just sitting back and letting it all unfold,” she said.
