Boston Red Sox Could Recall Rich Hill For Third Stint In 2022

The Boston Red Sox are trying to get their hands on the best pitchers this free agency.

There is a handful of players who have already signed up. However, there are tested players like Rich Hill who could be worth looking into.

The 41-year-old has proven to be still effective, and it appears he has no plans of calling it quits yet.

One team that Hill appears to be open to joining is the Red Sox. However, the level of talks between the two sides have been nothing more than social than business, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reported.

"There is an interest, without a doubt," Hill said to Speier in an interview. "There's a need on the other end. (But) the need for starting pitching is very apparent throughout the league - not just in Boston. It's also many other clubs that need it."

The Red Sox enter spring training with a mix that includes Chris Sale, Nathan Eovaldi, Nick Pivetta, Tanner Houck, and Connor Seabold.

Hill could be added to that rotation, giving Boston an experienced starter at the back end as he is one of the oldest active players who continues to show he is still reliable.

Last season with the New York Mets, the many-time Pitcher of the Month awardee owned a 3.86 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 8.5 strikeouts per nine in 158 2/3 innings.

These numbers were the second-highest total in his career for the Tampa Bay Rays and the Mets, Yardbarker noted.

Another thing that could back Hill is that he is no stranger to Boston. He spent four of his 17 seasons with the Red Sox, the first from 2010 to 2012 and the second one in 2015.

Hill is a free agent and holds the distinction of being one of 12 pitchers to make 30 starts at the age of 41 or older.

He joins a list of luminaries that includes Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux and Roger Clemens.

Regardless of whether he comes to terms with the Red Sox or not, one thing is clear–Hill is 100% certain that he will be pitching in 2022.

“You continue to fall in love more and more with the game,” Hill stated. “I feel extremely fortunate to be able to be still putting on a uniform.”
