EBay research has revealed that Australians bought more than one million items on the Web site with the use of a mobile device this year.

The findings revealed that in July, 87,000 Australians bought 222,000 items from the Web site. The numbers see a significant rise from January figures that had 44,000 Australians buying 98,000 items.

The findings also showed that users of the eBay iPhone app purchased about 900,000 items worth $56 million. The average price per transaction comes to about $64. On the other hand, users who access eBay through WAP purchased around 160,000 items valued at over $17 million. WAP users paid $102 per item.

Android app users, meanwhile, purchased over 1,000 items valued at $52,000, with items having an average price of $21. Users of the eBay Blackberry app purchased about 600 items valued at $50,000, with each item having an average price of $41.

Deborah Sharkey, eBay Australia and New Zealand's managing director, said that customers have become aware that they can buy items anywhere and at anytime. "In fact, eBay mobile sales are growing faster in Australia than in any other eBay market with one item bought every 15 seconds," Sharkey said.

About 25 percent of Australian residents use their phones for online shopping, with a one-third making purchases more than once a week.
