In the aftermath of the series defeat to South Africa, Australia begin a new era during the first of three Tests against Pakistan, a day-night affair, starting Thursday at the Gabba in Brisbane.

The ground, known for its lively pace and bounce, will host its inaugural day-night Test as both teams pit a battery of young fast bowlers against each other. While the Australian attack will be led by Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, the visitors will count on the left-arm duo of Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Amir.

During the final Test against South Africa, Australia fielded three debutant batsmen in Matt Renshaw, Peter Handscomb and Nic Maddinson, besides recalling wicketkeper Matthew Wade and fast bowler Jackson Bird. These wholesale changes helped the Aussies claim a 7-wicket victory at the Adelaide Oval, and the selectors have decided to retain all five players for the first of three Tests against Pakistan.

Australia vs Pakistan first Test: Misbhaq-Ul-Haq returns

Pakistan were without regular captain Misbah-Ul-Haq and spinner Yasir Shah during the team's most recent Test loss at Hamilton, New Zealand. Both players will return for the Brisbane Test as Pakistan try to move on from the 0-2 series whitewash suffered against the Kiwis.

New Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur feels his fast bowlers are capable of taming the Aussies. "For us the key is adapting to conditions, and if we can adapt to conditions quick enough we'll be fine. I constantly remind the players if we can be getting 270, 280, 300, we're in the game because we've got the ability to take 20 wickets," the former Australian coach said ahead of the first Test, via ESPNCricinfo.

Kevin Mitchell Jnr, curator at Gabba, expects the pitch to behave like a typical Gabba surface -- despite the match being played under floodlights. "Pretty well standard, along the same lines as normal. We've got a reasonable amount of grass cover on the wicket so we think that's going to play the same as a normal day Test."

Pakistan have never won a Test match against Australia in Brisbane. They've lost thrice and drawn once.
