Android users have complained over their handsets because the gadgets lack the function to increase font size. Consumers have been lodging complaints as far back as 2008, with many users consulting forums on how to increase the font sizes on popular devices from HTC and Motorola.

Users in online forums have suggested using the ChompSMS app to increase text size on phones. However, Android users want the company to add a feature to adjust sizes natively without the use of different applications.

The problem particularly affects older smartphone users and the visually impaired. "I am visually impaired and need larger fonts. I feel like Google forgot about us folks that need a larger font and do not necessarily only use screen readers... This is an accessibility issue that needs to be addressed quickly," said a member of the Android forum.

A feature that allows font sizes to be adjusted easily is available in BlackBerry and iPhone 4. BlackBerry fonts sizes range from 5pt to 14pt, which can apply to messaging, contacts and menus. The iPhone 4, on the other hand, have font sizes from 20pt to 56pt, with emails displayed in the chosen size when opened.
