Rafael Nadal survived opening round test at the 2015 US Open. The Spanish tennis star defeated up-and-coming star Borna Coric in four sets 6-3 6-2 4-6 6-4 on Monday evening at Flushing Meadows. Nadal will continue his US Open campaign against Diego Schwartzman, who beat Elias Ymer 6-3 6-2 6-2.

The eight-seeded Spanish tennis star got even with the Coric who beat him in straight sets in Basel last October. Determined not to suffer another upset from Coric, Nadal played a stellar match to seal the spot in the second round in two hours and 46 minutes.

Nadal, who has never made the final of a grand slam tournament this season, is bidding to win his 15th grand slam title and his third US Open trophy. Nadal won the US Open in 2010 and 2013, but last year, the Mallorca native failed to defend his title due to a right wrist injury. Going into his match against Schwartzman, Nadal couldn’t be more ready.

“I practiced at a very high level of tennis during the previous weeks,” Nadal said, reported ATPWorldTour.com. “That gives me calm, that gives me confidence, I know if I’m able to keep those feelings, I will have the success again.”

The second-round match marks the second meeting for Nadal and Schwartzman. The played each other in the clay courts of Acapulco in 2013, where the Spanish tennis star won 6-2 6-2.

Meanwhile, the 74th-ranked Argentine Schwartzman is coming off from straight sets victory over Swedish qualifier during the first round action 6-3 6-2 6-2 at Flushing Meadows. Schwartzman seemed to be on a breakthrough year, winning 10 of his total 13 career wins, this season. Schwartzman trails in his ATP head-to-head series against Nadal 1-0. Their second round match takes place at the Louis Armstrong Stadium on Sept. 2 (EDT).
