Nokia made its way to the rumor mill of late, with reports that indicated that the company was going to re-enter the phone-making business soon. However, the Finland-based tech giant had already issues a relatively forceful statement to refute such claims.

“These reports are false and include comments incorrectly attribute to a Nokia Networks executive,” the statement read. “Nokia reiterates it currently has no plans to manufacture or sell consumer handsets.”

Apparently, the company cannot make a comeback into the smartphone market until 2016 due to a signed agreement that it had with Microsoft. PC World has reported that Nokia had actually decided to sell its collection of devices to Microsoft two years ago.

Although, there will not be any Nokia-made handsets sometime soon, the company had reportedly mentioned some intentions to license its storied name to a third party handset maker, according to Engadget. That said, there might no longer be Nokia-manufactured smartphones for the time-being, but there could be Nokia-approved ones.

Reports about the third-party handset maker are still making their rounds on the Internet, primarily because Nokia had not addressed the issue in their denial. The statement was reportedly refuting claims that Nokia was going to start making Android-based smartphones from a new R&D center in China.

There was no mention of the reports about Nokia deciding to merely design the devices and allowing other unspecified companies to make them, and for good reason. It must be noted that, just last November, Ramzi Haidamus, the president of Nokia Technologies, mentioned in a public presentation that the company saw value in designing and licensing smartphones.

However, no matter what direction Nokia decides to take, Microsoft has restricted them to use their brand on any new devices until the fourth quarter of 2016, as indicated in their signed agreement, according to The Verge.
