George R. R. Martin has completed the "12 Days of Westeros" Christmas countdown. The author had previously announced that the countdown was not for the release of "Winds of Winter." The author shared how some of the noble families in Westeros would celebrate Christmas in the countdown.

The countdown was started on the official Twitter page of George R.R. Martin. The first day of the countdown focused on House Tully bearing gifts. The tweet was accompanied by an image of presents wrapped in front of the banner of the House. Commenting on the picture, many of the fans speculated that the countdown was about the release of "Winds of Winter."

The second day was about House Greyjoy. The author tweeted a picture of House Greyjoy's sigil with the words "what is dead may never die," "but may need new batteries." The third day was about House Frey who decorated the Christmas tree using only the colour red; this may be a hint at the infamous Red Wedding that the House was involved in.

The fourth day was about House Bolton entertaining their neighbours. On the fifth day House Arryn hung Christmas socks. On the sixth day a picture of House Tyrell sigil in the middle of flowers was posted by George R.R. Martin.

After seeing increasing anticipation among fans about the possibility of the release of "Winds of Winter" at the end of the countdown, George R.R. Martin clarified on the Twitter account that this was not the case. He clarified that this was only an attempt to spread some Christmas cheer.

The picture of seventh day showed House Martell's dinner table. On the eighth day House Baratheon loaded a sleigh with Christmas gifts. The ninth day was about House Lannister with a few gifts on a bed. On the tenth day House Stark celebrated Christmas in the snowy winters of the North.

On the eleventh day House Targaryen used the dragons to get a fire going. The twelfth and the final picture focused on the men of the Night's Watch celebrating Christmas at The Wall. Commenting on the final picture, some of the fans expressed their disappointment that the highly anticipated book "Winds of Winter" was not released by George R.R. Martin.
