Just like that, the World Series has become a best-of-three affair.

Barely 24 hours after giving up a 1-0 lead and falling back 1-2 in the 2013 World Series, the Boston Red Sox finally scraped a road win against the St. Louis Cardinals in baseball's biggest stage. Although they fell behind late in the third inning on a Carlos Beltran RBI, the Boston offense managed a tying run in the fifth inning, courtesy of a Stephen Drew sacrifice fly ball.

It was at that point that Cardinals starting pitcher Lance Lynn felt the strain. Lynn had made 25 pitches in the fifth inning, and by the time Jonny Gomes stepped up to the plate, his arm was less than steady, forcing the Cardinals to bring up relief pitcher Seth Maness.

With two bases loaded, Gomes sent the ball over the left wall, clearing the way for Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz and himself, and setting up a 4-1 lead for the Red Sox in the face of a stunned Busch Stadium crowd of 47,469, the largest ever recorded in St. Louis.

Maness was clearly the goat in that crucial sequence. The right-handed pitcher has only given up two home runs in 170 appearances to right-handed batters in 2013. In contrast, Gomes does not have much luck against righties, hitting home runs in just one out of 23.5 face-offs.

Gomes himself was not supposed to play. He was a late addition to the roster after the Red Sox's ALCS hero, Shane Victorino, was not cleared of a lingering back pain. Yet, he struck when it was needed the most, giving Boston not just the three runs, but also a clean slate coming into Game 5, also in Busch Stadium.

The series shifts back to the starting pitchers for Game 1. Jon Lester, Boston's hero for that 9-point shutout, will return to the mound. So will Adam Wainwright, the man on the losing end of the match-up. Lester would like nothing more than to have a reprise of the stellar 7 2/3 innings that he pitched in Game 1, while Wainwright is out to regain the favour with the Cardinals crowd after being humiliated at Fenway Park.
