A Wellington designer said she was thrilled to see the Duchess of Cambridge wear her design in an event last week.

Rebecca Taylor is no stranger to celebrities wearing her design. Sarah Jessica Parker, Reese Witherspoon, Dakota Fanning, Cameron Diaz, Carmen Electra and Taylor Swift are some of the famous people who have worn her creations. But Taylor said Kate Middleton wearing her work brings a whole new level of fulfillment.

Taylor, born and raised in Wellington and now living in New York, told Dominion Post that seeing a royalty, particularly Middleton, wearing her suit was one of her biggest celebrity moments as a designer.

"Her style is always impeccable," she said, adding, "I was thrilled because I'm a huge fan of Catherine and Will.''

Middleton was photographed wearing Taylor's tweed suit to a London Scott-Amundsen Centenary Race to the South Pole reception on Thursday last week.

A royal stylist got some clothes from Taylor 's London shop a few months ago but Taylor did not know who would wear the outfits. She only learned who wore her clothes after seeing Middleton's photo. She later received a thank you note from Buckingham Palace.

Taylor said the outfit had already sold out and there were no plans to cut more.

She said the next best celebrity moment for her as a designer is to see Michelle Obama wearing one of her designs.

"I think she is pretty amazing," she told Dominion Post.

Taylor attended St Catherine's College in Wellington, and studied fashion design at the Bowerman School of Design and Wellington Polytechnic (now Massey University). She told Dominion Post she left for New York to jumpstart her career with only $400 in her pocket.

Today, Taylor's brand is distributed in 250 cities in 40 countries, with flagship stores in New York and Hong Kong.
