Sex burns calories -- a lot of researches claim, but a new study by Canadian researchers has discovered just how many calories get burned on an average person during sex.

It has been long known that calories are burnt while having sex. Taking a step forward, experts at University of Quebec at Montreal conducted a study that has given the numbers to support the fact.

The Study

The study consisted of 21 heterosexual couples 18 to 35 years of age. While the study was being conducted, the couples were given a fitness tracker called the SenseWear armband, which kept a tap on their energy expenditure.

In the start, participants had to go through a 30minute treadmill test that provided them the baseline measure for comparison of results in two situations: Jogging and a sex session.

The couples' results were decided upon four sessions of sex at home during which they had to wear the armband which helped them compare the jogging session results with their sex sessions.

Also, couples had to answer the questions like how tired they were, how much they enjoyed the session and how much efforts they put in it.

Results

According to the study, sex among young people leads to burning of 4.2 calories in a minute for men and 3.1 calories a minute for women. Thus, on an average sex duration of 24.7minutes, a man will lose 104 calories and a woman will burn some 69 calories.

The results from the jogging session suggest that men burn 9.2 calories per minute and women burn some 7.1 calories.

Results lead to a conclusion that having sex is better than walking in an attempt to burn calories.

However, the results also show that sex can substitute for walking exercise, but not jogging or running. Jogging and running are still a faster and better way to burn calories.

Another study by David Allison, a biostatistician at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, found that some 21 calories on an average can be burnt during sex. Nevertheless, the results by substituting the exercise pattern with sex are not too desirable, as he discovered a sex session that lasted for about 6 minutes and burnt a meager 20 calories, which is just more or less equivalent to the calories burnt by walking.

However, according to experts at Quebec, if enough effort and passion is incorporated then sex can be counted as a "significant exercise" to burn more calories.
